THE AMITYVILLE HAUNTING (2011) Review

Directed by: Geoff Meed
Starring: Jason Williams, Amy Van Horne, Devin Clark

I am nowhere near deluded enough to expect anything good from The Asylum. Ever. I get the idea of 'mockbusters' and understand that they're not meant to be cinematic masterpieces, but even I didn't think that they could produce something this terrible. I'd like to say that this is low even for their standards but then again The Asylum don’t seem to have any standards.

THE AMITYVILLE HAUNTING begins with handheld footage of a horny young couple deciding to take themselves on an unauthorized tour of the infamous Amityville house. Once inside things start to get hot and heavy before they finally meet a bloody off-camera death.
Flash forward and we meet the Benson family who have just bought the Amityville house and are beginning to move in. They’re aware of the house’s grisly past but apparently it was all they could afford. One of the removalists has a fatal accident and from then on the ‘horror’ escalates. Eventually after a few strange happenings have occurred the father gets the idea of installing video cameras around the house and the movie starts to journey deep into PARANORMAL ACTIVITY territory. One of the cameras watches on as a door mysteriously opens by itself (gasp!) and the security alarm goes off. And that’s about as scary (if you can even call that scary) as the movie gets. Almost all of the deaths happen off-camera, and at the moments when something is about to happen the video jumps or blacks out and we only get quick flashes in between.

I honestly cannot think of one aspect of this movie that wasn't crap. The writing was crap, the effects were crap, the acting was crap and all of the characters were completely unlikeable. I couldn't wait for them all to die. The film even uses that tired old trick of trying to persuade viewers that what they’re seeing is ‘real footage’. Do people even fall for that anymore? Any moron can check the IMDb page and clearly see that the characters in the film are played by actors, and incompetent ones at that.

By the time it was all over I felt relieved but also disgusted at myself for actually sitting through the entire movie. I know you always hear the phrase ‘worst movie ever’ thrown around a lot, but this has to be a strong contender. It is definitely the worst movie I've seen in a long time. In fact I'm not even going to waste any more time on this review. All you need to know is that this movie is shit. Stay away.

URBAN EXPLORER (2011) Review

Directed by:Andy Fetscher
Starring: Nathalie Kelley, Nick Eversman, Klaus Stiglmeier

Urban Exploration seems to me like the perfect subject for a horror film. The whole point of it is to venture into dark, isolated, out of the way places where few people ever go. I'm actually a little surprised that I've never seen a horror film using this theme until now. Taking this subject ensures some perfect horror ingredients, darkness, claustrophobia, disorientation and the unknown. But is that enough to create a good, solid horror movie?

Denis (Eversman) and his girlfriend Lucia (Kelley) have organized a little subterranean tour of Berlin's mysterious underground. They meet up with another two explorers Marie and Juna and their German guide Kris who leads them through a nightclub and then deep down underground. Their destination is an old walled-off Nazi bunker, and the trip should take them about two hours there and another two hours back. Simple right? However the trip is anything but uneventful and they soon find themselves fighting for their lives as a subterranean psychopath stalks them relentlessly. Will they ever see daylight again?

The movie starts off rather slowly, the characters all meeting each other at a designated spot before being led underground by their guide. When they finally find themselves deep down in the darkness Kris leads them on, pointing out features as they go. Although the going is rather slow, this gives the film a great chance to set the mood and show off some great shots of the surroundings. The underground location is actually one of my favorite parts of the movie. The low light, torch beams, rubbish strewn everywhere, water dripping down long tunnels all come together to create a somehow beautiful experience but at the same time you also have a feeling of impending doom. I will admit however that some of these huge caverns look like they might just be factories or warehouses filmed late at night, they just seem a little too big and intricate and they seem to vary quite a bit.

So visually the film is excellent, but what about the rest? Well I thought the characters were quite well written and I think that it was a smart move to make them (apart from Denis and Lucia) people who have all just met for the first time. It's a good way to make sure that relationships don't get in the way too much. Surprisingly for the most part they don't make too many stupid decisions either, although the movie does have it's fair share such as Marie deciding to point her camera right at Kris's face and take a flash photo while he is trying to navigate a narrow beam across a dangerously deep shaft.
I thought the killer was really well written and cast too and he actually reminded me a lot of the Aussie madman Mick Taylor from WOLF CREEK. In fact the whole movie (apart from the setting) was reminiscent of that film. Not that that's a bad thing.
I should also mention the effects too, which seemed to be all practical and by the end there is quite a bit of gore and blood without going over the top.

Storywise it's pretty simple and there aren't a whole lot of needless subplots to get in the way. The pacing was a bit inconsistent in areas though, and this 90 minute movie seemed to me a lot longer because of it. I also had a bit of a problem with the ending. There was a point where I thought it could have ended, but it didn't. It dragged on for a little longer and I really thought the last few scenes could have been left out. Also there were a few scenes which seemed a little unbelievable or illogical. But apart from those few problems I actually enjoyed URBAN EXPLORER and I recommend it to anybody who hasn't yet seen it.

Fresh Plot Details For GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2

GRAVE ENCOUNTERS is probably one of the better found footage films I've seen recently, and apparently a lot of other people thought so too because a sequel is on the way. And it seems that it will be taking a leaf out of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE's book, with the sequel set in a world where the original movie is an actual movie. If that makes sense. Anyway thanks to Dread Central here are the new plot details.

This terrifying new sequel follows a group of film students who break into the hospital from the first film to do their own paranormal investigation and quickly realize that GRAVE ENCOUNTERS was not just a movie… it was real”

Once again thanks to Dread Central, we have a name attached to direct. John Poloquin will helm the sequel which will once again be penned by the Vicious Brothers.
GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2 is currently in pre-production. Stay tuned for more details.

Retro Review: RESIDENT EVIL 3: NEMESIS (PSX)

There is actually a bit of a story behind this review. It’s not long but you can skip the next paragraph and get straight to the review if you want.

RE3 is the first game in the franchise I ever played. It must have been around ten years ago or maybe longer, my brothers and I were given a pirated copy of the game and we would sit out in the back room taking turns at playing through it. We ended up getting to the final part of the game and so we saved it. The next time we turned on our Playstation to finish it, my older brother and I noticed that the save file was mysteriously missing. It seems out younger brother had deleted it to make some room for one of his own games. We were pretty pissed. Then some time later in an unrelated argument I picked up the closest thing to me and threw it across the room. It turned out to be the disc for RE3 and my throw had scratched it. It never worked again. For some reason we never got around to getting another copy and so we never finished the game. Since then I’ve played almost every RE game that has been released but I never did end up getting another copy of NEMESIS. Then a couple of weeks ago I noticed that it had been uploaded to the Playstation Network and so I downloaded it and finally finished it after all these years. So the point of this story is that it took me more than 10 years to finish this damn game. Now onto the review!

RESIDENT EVIL 3 is one of the better games in the franchise. Not the best but I definitely prefer it over the newer releases like the hugely overrated RE4 and the totally craptastic RE5. At least RE3 had actual zombies in it. The premise is pretty simple and basically the same as it was in the previous two games.  Raccoon City is the centre of a zombie outbreak thanks to the evil Umbrella Corporation and our protagonist is stuck in the middle of it all. Survival and escape are your goals, but to do so you will need to traverse the city killing zombies and solving puzzles along the way. And speaking of the protagonist, RE3 introduced a new lead character in the form of Jill Valentine, a member of the police’s special forces squad S.T.A.R.S. She begins her journey alone but soon meets up with Carlos, a mercenary working for Umbrella. They decide to join forces. Well kind of. Carlos doesn’t actually do much, he keeps talking about working together but then all of a sudden he’ll run off and leave you on your own. It’s probably for the best though because AI partners in RE haven’t proven to be very helpful at all. Later in the game you do get to play as Carlos although it doesn’t really add anything new to the game.

Another new addition to the series is the Nemesis creature, a massive mutated freak with a rocket launcher who stalks you for the entire game. The atmosphere can actually get pretty tense thanks in part to the Nemesis and also to a kind of Pavlov’s dogs effect that the game has on the player. During the Nemesis’ appearances a certain type of dramatic music plays, but sometimes the very same music plays without the creature making an appearance. It’s actually a really clever way to increase the tension and it really works. It doesn’t help that the Nemesis can easily beat the absolute crap out of you either, and the fact that he is a quick bastard means that when he shows up you just want to get the fuck away from him.
RE3 also incorporates split decisions into the gameplay. At key points in the game you will be forced to choose between two options, and you have to choose quickly or else the game chooses for you. These choices can alter the story a little and can also have an effect on which ending you get but they really have no serious consequences. There are no wrong choices which makes the split decisions seem a little pointless to me. It is a novel idea but I think the game could have done without them.

RE3 has two difficulty settings, Easy and Hard. Easy is too fucking easy and even Hard is a little too soft in my opinion. The difficulty choice does change a few things in the game for example the items you start off with, the items you find in certain locations, how many items you can carry at a time, the number of bullets it takes to down a zombie etc. If you choose the Hard setting however you can also pick up special items dropped by the Nemesis each time you defeat him. Hard will also limit your ability to save whereas Easy will give you unlimited saves.

There are a good range of weapons in the game, from the humble knife to handguns, shotguns, an assault rifle, grenade launcher and the rocket launcher if you are lucky enough to find it. The different types of gunpowder scattered throughout the game can be combined and used to make different types of ammo, and of course there are the red, blue and green herbs for healing.

RESIDENT EVIL 3 is not a long game. It can easily be finished in under 6 hours, although it does have a certain level of replayability. It takes things into consideration such as the time it takes you to complete and the amount of times you save and then gives you a grade at the end. Depending on which grade you get you can unlock extra costumes which can be changed during your next play-through. Another thing you unlock upon completion of the game is the Mercenaries mode. This allows you to choose from a few different characters and undertake a kind of time trial. You need to make your way through the city from point A to point B before the timer reaches zero. You can pick up extra time by killing zombies or dodging them etc and at the end you will be awarded with an amount of money depending on how well you did. These credits can then be used to unlock special weapons with unlimited ammo which can then be used in the main game.

To summarize I have to say that RE3 is a good solid game, not great but not bad either. Due to its age it suffers from badly dated graphics and some clunky controls but it makes up for that in plenty of other ways. The atmosphere is amazing and it seems like every element has been engineered to increase the tension, from the haunting moans coming from the distance to the encounters with the Nemesis creature, the split decisions and even the loading screens. Like the other RE games it involves a lot of puzzles, none of which are hard but plenty of which are strange and questionable (who the fuck would hide a battery inside a statue?) and you will find yourself doing a lot of running back and forth especially when you realize that you left a key item in your item box way back in a save room. Although the game’s length is fairly short, the unlockable extras and Mercenaries mode do allow for a bit of replayability and when you finally get enough credits to unlock the Gatling gun with unlimited ammo it is a hell of a lot of fun blasting zombies with that thing. Definitely a must play for RE fans.

Official Poster For PIRANHACONDA

I fail to see how anybody can actually enjoy any of these Syfy creature mashups. Everything I've seen so far has been painfully crap and it looks like this may just fit in perfectly. I get the idea, these movies are supposed to be 'so bad they're good' or whatever but for me they just don't work that way. They're just plain bad. Well at least they're consistent. We'll just have to wait and see whether or not PIRANHACONDA can possibly be any worse than the craptacular SHARKTOPUS. There's not a lot of news regarding this movie although I did find a little snippet of plot information which says that the film involves "a low-budget horror movie crew, inept kidnappers and a reptile expert battle a monstrous anaconda/piranha hybrid in the Amazon jungle
Check out the official one sheet below.

Somehow this is the first time I've even heard of this film and I think I know why. Anyway I'm sure plenty of people will be interested to see this so read on and check out the newly released poster along with a couple of teaser trailers.
You can also check out the official Facebook page for more info and although there is no official release date as of yet, a sequel has already been announced which has its own official Facebook page.

Official Synopsis For WOLF CREEK 2

It's been a while since there was any news from the upcoming WOLF CREEK 2, all that's really been known until recently is that John Jarratt will be returning as the sadistic Mick Taylor. But now thanks to Darclight Films there is an official synopsis which you can check out below. Is it just me or does this sound exactly the same as the premise for the first film? Whatever the case, I am actually looking forward to this sequel.

Their dream Outback adventure soon becomes a horrific reality when they encounter the site's most infamous local, the last man any traveler to the vast and isolated region ever wants to meet; MICK TAYLOR (John Jarratt).

Official Trailer & Posters For AREA 407

Getting tired of the same old found footage films about ghosts and unseen forces? Feel like the sub-genre could do with a bit of an originality injection? Well then how about a found footage horror involving a plane-crash, a secret government area and dinosaurs? This is exactly what AREA 407 (formerly TAPE 407) is offering. My first thoughts on this were that it just sounds too far fetched and unrealistic for a found-footage, but then again so was TROLL HUNTER and I enjoyed that plenty. Also, dinosaurs totally rock. So it looks like I'll just have to wait it out and see for myself. In the meantime courtesy of Dread Central and Horror-movies.ca I can share the official trailer, 2 posters and the synopsis below. Enjoy.

Synopsis:The film opens with two teenagers flying from New York to Los Angeles on New Years Eve. Their nightmare begins when their plane hits extreme turbulence mid-flight. The relentless weather attack causes panic and terror amongst the passengers until the plane ultimately crashes in a remote government-testing area. The handful of survivors from the crash, bloody and disoriented, are then insistently pursued in the darkness by unknown predators that, unbeknownst to them, are part of the government’s top-secret Mesa Experiment.”

Official Synopsis For WRONG TURN 5

I have a general rule of thumb I use in regards to horror franchises: after the third film none of the other sequels will be worth watching. At all. Once in a blue moon a franchise will break this rule but WRONG TURN (for me at least) has followed it perfectly. I personally thought the fourth film was complete rubbish. But apparently enough people liked it for another sequel to be planned and below you will find the official synopsis. WRONG TURN 5 will be filmed in Bulgaria in the next few weeks and is written and directed by returning director Declan O'Brien.

Synopsis: In the next chilling chapter of Wrong Turn, a small West Virginia town is hosting the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween, where throngs of costumed partygoers gather for a wild night of music and mischief. But an inbred family of hillbilly cannibals kill the fun when they trick and treat themselves to a group of visiting college students who are dying for a good time ...

And for all of you WRONG TURN fans out there, you might be excited to know that Bloody-Disgusting is currently running a competition to win a walk-in role on the upcoming movie. To enter you just need to be a U.S citizen, over 21 and have a valid passport. Travel, accommodation and expenses for the winner will all be covered.

AKIRA (1988) Review

Directed by: Katsuhiro Ohtomo
Starring: Mitsuo Iwata, Nozomu Sasaki, Mami Koyama

Where do I even begin? I've seen AKIRA at least ten times, probably more because it is one of my all time favorite films and the single greatest piece of anime I have ever witnessed. And as with the majority of people in the Western world, I have AKIRA to thank for really getting me interested in anime in the first place. In regards to anime this is one of the most important films ever made and introduced an entirely new audience to the Japanese animation style. In fact it's probably more popular in the Western world than in its native Japan.

AKIRA is adapted from the 2,000 page manga (which I haven't got around to reading yet) of the same name written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Ohtomo who also wrote and directed the film. It is set in futuristic Neo-Tokyo, rebuilt from the destruction of World War 3. It's a city of neon lights, technology and science inhabited by corrupt politicians, an oppressive military force, violent street gangs and anarchistic revolutionist groups. It is also a city which is tearing itself apart and as the tagline reads "Neo-Tokyo is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E"
Shôtarô Kaneda (voiced by Mitsuo Iwata) is the leader of a biker gang made up of a group of misfits including his childhood friend Tetsuo Shima (Sasaki). After an accident Tetsuo unwittingly becomes involved in a secret experimental government project known as AKIRA. On his way to save his friend, Kaneda runs into a group of anti-government activists who are looking to infiltrate the AKIRA project and see what dark secrets the military and government are hiding. Meanwhile the testing performed on Tetsuo has unlocked immense and dangerous telekinetic abilities which he violently unleashes on the world which has oppressed him for so long. It is then up to Kaneda and friends to stop Tetsuo's destructive rampage.

As you can imagine being adapted from 2,000 pages worth of manga, AKIRA is an extremely complex and multifaceted movie, but at the same time it isn't difficult to follow. Condensing those pages down into around 2 hours of animation has most likely resulted in removing any unnecessary and unimportant elements and leaves us with the essentials. Having said that though, multiple viewings will help you pick up on things you may have missed the first time. The film spends a lot of time showing us the relationship between Kaneda and Tetsuo and although they have been friends since childhood, Tetsuo shows some obvious resentment towards his friend because he is always treating him like a child and underestimating his abilities. AKIRA deals with a whole range of emotions and themes including friendship, loyalty, betrayal, corruption, greed, anger and power. Even though this may seem like a lot to take in, the fluid storytelling does a good job of preventing any of this getting too complicated.

Visually AKIRA is stunning, even after all these years. The night scenes in particular are incredibly rendered and the color palette is immense with around 327 different colors (in fact 50 unique colors were created specifically for this movie). The action sequences are fast paced and visually arresting, from the opening fight between rival motorbike gangs right up to the film's climax.
The soundtrack is another item on AKIRA's long list of positive points, made with a combination of traditional Japanese instruments and more modern electronics such as synthesizers. But what is unusually more effective is the use of key scenes with absolutely no sound at all, just this incredibly huge silence which seems to fit in perfectly with the theme of psychic abilities.

The biggest thing AKIRA is (unfairly in my opinion) criticized over is the seemingly gratuitous use of violence. I'm not sure whether it's specifically the violence or whether it's simply the fact that such a huge level of it has been used in an animated film. A lot of people seem to equate animation (especially anime for some reason) to mean child-friendly, which is often not the case. Be warned this is no slick Disney production, this a dark and gritty film and parents are advised to watch it before letting their children see it.

I should probably finish up now. If I haven't already persuaded you to check this out then I probably never will. AKIRA is more than just a violent animated film, it has been a huge influence on modern cinema and without it you would probably never see the likes of THE MATRIX and countless other movies. It is also full of social commentary and emotion. Some may find it difficult to watch but I say it is undoubtedly a must-see and has earned its status as an absolute classic. And I'll give you a couple of tips. If you get the chance to get this on Blu-ray, do so because it has never looked better. Also stay away from the dubbed version, the lousy English voice acting is nothing but distracting.

MOCKINGBIRD LANE Early Concept Art

Wow. A lot of people are not going to like this at all. Bryan Fuller's The Munsters reboot/remake/re-imagining has been gaining momentum lately with the announcement of Eddie Izzard cast in the role of Grandpa and Charity Wakefield as Marylin, but we haven't really seen anything visual to tell us what direction this show is going to take. Until now. Not only is there an early look at the Munster's mansion (what's with all the green?) but also a few costume designs for Grandpa and Lily which are completely different from what the original TV show brought us. Check them out courtesy of DreadCentral and EntertainmentWeekly below.

Check out the introduction poster below and then following that you will find some neat blueprints and some detailed interior shots of the ship. Enjoy.
