5 Of The Best: Movies Of 2011

2011 wasn't exactly the best cinematic year and although I didn't see anywhere near all the films I would have like to, most of what I did see was pretty disappointing. Nevertheless here are my top 5 choices, 5 movies that rocked my socks off in 2011 -

The links to the full reviews are in the titles.

THE ORPHAN KILLER (review)

"This film is about Audrey and her brother Marcus. When they were children their parents were killed by some burglars in a horrific break-in. So as a result they were sent to the Saint Michael's Orphanage. Soon after Audrey is adopted by the policeman who saved them. Marcus has been very violent (understandably) because of what happened when they were younger. He is left behind and made to wear a mask by the Nuns who work at the orphanage because of his destructive behavior. Flash forward and now Audrey herself works at the orphanage. But Marcus is hell bent on getting his revenge on those who he thinks treated him wrong. Nobody is safe, including his sister who he thinks abandoned him. Let the blood bath ensue"

My favorite slasher of the year, although Chromeskull would be a close second. A great independent horror movie and the gore and practical effects are phenomenal.

STAKE LAND (review)

"Martin was a normal teenage boy before the country collapsed in an empty pit of economic and political disaster. A vampire epidemic has swept across what is left of the nation's abandoned towns and cities, and it's up to Mister, a death dealing, rogue vampire hunter, to get Martin safely north to Canada, the continent's New Eden"

Like Zombieland meets The Road. But with lots of vampires and religious nuts and no irritating Jesse Eisenberg.

THE DEAD (review)

"When the last evacuation flight out of war-torn Africa crashes off the coast, American Air Force Engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy emerges as the sole survivor in a land where the dead are returning to life and attacking the living. On the run in a hostile and inhospitable parched landscape, where sudden death lurks around every sun-burnished corner, Murphy has to use his wits and ingenuity if he is to get home alive to his family."

The best zombie movie I've seen since the original Night of the Living Dead. Period.

A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE (review)

"An escaped murderer is in pursuit of his ex-girlfriend, who has fled to start a new life in a small town"

A serial killer movie with a difference, and a filming style you will either love or hate.

SNOWTOWN (review)

"Based on true events, 16 year-old Jamie falls in with his mother's new boyfriend and his crowd of self-appointed neighborhood watchmen, a relationship that leads to a spree of torture and murder"

These are in no particular order, but I can tell you that this is my personal favorite movie of the year across any genre. The most powerful, disturbing and bleak movie of 2011.
