HAUTE TENSION (2003) Review

Directed by: Alexandre Aja
Starring: Cecile De France, Maiwenn Le Besco, Philippe Nahon

This is a perfect example of why people who are unwilling to watch movies with subtitles are missing out on some great horror. Along with REC and Let The Right One In, this is one of my favorite foreign language horror films of the last decade.
This French film was released as Switchblade Romance in the UK and High Tension in the US. The movie is apparently based on the novel Intensity by another of my favorite authors Dean Koontz.

The story follows two best friends Marie (Cecile De France) and Alexia (Maiwenn Le Besco)  as they make their way to Alexia's parent house out in the country. The plan is to find some peace to work on their studies but instead the find themselves in the middle of a cat-and-mouse game with a psychopathic killer. After Alexia's parents are murdered and Alexia is kidnapped, Marie stows away in the back of the killers truck.

Filled with tension and a dark, murky atmosphere this is a fast paced and gore filled thriller that should keep any horror fan satisfied. And the twist near the end of the film is awesome. There isn't anything new in this slasher flick, but that's exactly the way it should be. Rather than trying to reinvent the genre, it seems that High Tension was made to celebrate it.
